The Sandwich Society was formed in 1968 to protect the environment of our Medieval Town and its surroundings so; whilst looking lovingly at Sandwich's past, concerns itself primarily with its present and future.
As the Town's Civic Society we work actively with the Civic Trust and have for some years participated in the Trust's National Heritage Open Days programme. This takes place over the second weekend in September when we hope to offer a varied range of properties 'open to view'
Members of the Society's committee represent various aspects of the Town's community. It considers all relevant planning applications submitted to the district council. We endeavour to ensure that applications reflect the wishes of the owners without compromising the fabric of our historic town.
The Society, in co-operation with the Town and District Councils, seek to promote the trade and tourism of the Town and to assist and encourage improvements to the amenities and infrastructure.
Whilst the Society does not hold regular public meetings it is open to suggestions and willing to meet the needs and wishes of the community. The Annual General Meeting held in the late Autumn is open to all and includes a relevant and interesting speaker. A successful dinner was held in 2005 to celebrate the bicentenary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar and we hope to have a special event to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the granting of the title to Edward Montague, the first Earl, in 1660.
Membership of the Society is open to all interested in the past and future of our Town. The minimum subscription is £6. The Society publishes an annual Journal which is free to members.
A selection of past editions is available from the Chairman.
